The 36th Farmers’ Day celebration saw nine persons honoured for their noticeable contribution to agriculture in the Cape Coast metropolis.
Seven farmers, a fisherman, fish processor and a poultry farmer received certificates and prize items worth thousands of cedis as awards for their roles in food production in the area.

The occasion was graced with the presence of the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa traditional area, Isabarima Kwesi Atta II ; the Cape Coast mayor, Hon. Ernest Arthur ; the Metropolitan Director of Agriculture, Mrs. Olympia Williams ; the Metropolitan Cooperative Director, Ms. Rachel Ofosua Sarpong ; the Regional Chief Imam; Mr. Alhassan Yunusah and other dignitaries. It also saw farmers and industry players in the agricultural sector exhibiting their produce and products to the public present.

52 year old farmer from the Dehia suburb, Yaw Afari picked the highest position for the day as the Overall Best Metro Farmer for 2020. His prize items included wax prints, litres of glyphosate, wellington boots, knapsack sprayers, cutlasses, wheel barrow, tricycle (aboboyaa), gas stove with cylinder and some electronic gadgets.



Other positions recognised were Runners Up, Best Crop Farmer, Best Youth Farmer, Best Physically Challenged Farmer and Best Youth Farmer.

In his address, Osabarima Kwesi Atta II who also doubled as the chairman for the event congratulated all winners and encouraged all farmers to work hard to earn the recognition in the years to come.

Mrs. Olympia Williams expressed her gratitude to farmers and the public for their patronage of the several agricultural intervention programs even under strict COVID-19 preventive measures.

According to a survey by the department, this year has recorded higher sales of seeds and other agricultural inputs compared to the previous year.

The metropolitan mayor advised the youth to see agriculture as a profitable venture and also access the “Farm Village” program rolled out by his office.

The theme for this year’s Farmers’ Day event was Ensuring Agribusiness Development under COVID-19 Opportunities and Challenges. The event was organised at the Cape Coast Jubilee Park with support from  Kastle FM.
